The Nigerian equities market finally put a green day on the board on Friday, October 9, 2026. The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) rose 321.05 points, or 0.13%, to close at 248,363.55, up from Thursday's close of 248,042.50. Small as it was, the gain broke a run of losing sessions that had weighed on sentiment for more than a week.
Friday in numbers
Figures below are those that matched across the exchange-derived daily reports we checked:
- All-Share Index: 248,363.55, up 321.05 points (+0.13%)
- Market capitalisation: ₦161.26 trillion, up from ₦161.05 trillion, a gain of about ₦208.46 billion
- Volume: about 322 million shares, down sharply from roughly 492 million on Thursday
- Value traded: about ₦20.5 billion, roughly half of Thursday's level
The drop in volume and value is worth noting. Friday's rebound happened on noticeably thinner trading than the day before, which is one reason to treat it as a pause in selling rather than a confirmed change in direction.
What drove the move
Market reports credited the gain mainly to buying in large and mid-cap names that had fallen in recent sessions. Oando and MTN Nigeria (
MTNN) were among the stocks cited as lifting the index, with brewer and consumer-goods names also contributing according to one broker's daily report. Because
MTNN is one of the largest companies on the exchange by market value, even modest moves in its share price have an outsized effect on the ASI.
Gainers, losers and most active
- Top gainer: Regency Alliance Insurance (
REGALINS), up 10.00% to ₦0.77. - Other notable gainers: Livestock Feeds (
LIVESTOCK) and Guinea Insurance (
GUINEAINS), each up more than 9%. - Top loser: Red Star Express (REDSTAREX), down 9.76% to ₦13.40.
- Most active:
ZENITHBANK led by volume, ahead of
GTCO, as traders positioned around the bank's half-year results and newly announced interim dividend.
Note that very low-priced shares such as
REGALINS can post double-digit percentage moves on small changes in price. A ₦0.07 rise is 10% of a ₦0.70 share.
The week in context
Friday's green close was not enough to rescue the week: the market spent most sessions in the red, and the ASI finished below where it started on Monday. Even so, the index remains far above its level at the start of 2026, so the recent pullback is modest against this year's broader rally.
Several themes shaped the week:
- The Dangote Refinery IPO. With the application list closing on Tuesday, October 13, some market watchers have suggested that investors may have been selling existing holdings to fund applications. That is a plausible theory but hard to prove.
- Bank results and dividends. Zenith Bank's half-year results and ₦1.50 interim dividend, plus Stanbic IBTC's ₦4.50 interim dividend announced earlier, kept bank stocks in focus.
- Foreign interest. J.P. Morgan's announced plan to open a merchant bank in Nigeria added to the conversation about international appetite for Nigerian assets.
What to watch this week
- Tuesday, Oct 13: the Dangote Refinery IPO closes. Watch whether selling pressure in other stocks eases once that money is committed.
- Thursday, Oct 15: qualification date for Stanbic IBTC's interim dividend.
- More half-year results from listed companies, which can move individual stocks sharply.
What it means for everyday investors
One up-day after a losing streak is information, not a signal. The thinner volume on Friday suggests many investors were still on the sidelines. For long-term holders, the more useful exercise is to look at how your own stocks behaved during the red sessions: which held up, which fell hardest, and whether any single stock now takes up more of your portfolio than you intended.
