Day by day: a sharp Thursday, a small Friday bounce

Sector performance: oil and gas hit hardest

According to Proshare's weekly index report, the decline was broad:

Oil/Gas-3.85%

Why oil and gas stocks slipped

The week brought a new government plan for a ₦1,350 per litre ceiling on petrol's landing cost, which could squeeze supplier margins, while Aradel's 10% drop dragged the sector index. Some market watchers also point to profit-taking after a strong year and to cash being channelled into the Dangote Refinery IPO, which closes on 13 October. These explanations are reasonable but cannot be proven from the data alone.

What to watch next week

  1. Dangote Refinery IPO close (13 Oct). Once the offer closes, some liquidity tied up in subscriptions may return to the market over time.
  2. September inflation (expected mid-October). A further fall from 15.39% would support the CBN's easing stance.
  3. Q3 earnings season. Banks and large caps usually begin releasing third-quarter results in late October.
  4. Fixed-income yields. The one-year Treasury bill fell to 15.85% this week. Falling yields have historically helped push some investors towards equities.

What this means for investors

A 1% weekly dip after a near-60% year-to-date rally is a modest pullback, not a crash. Sharp single-stock moves, like Aradel's 10% fall in one day, are a reminder to check company announcements before reacting and to avoid putting too much money into one name. Long-term investors often use quieter weeks to review their portfolios rather than to trade on headlines.
