Wednesday's bank lift vanished. The NGX closed down 1.98% with twice as many losers as winners

Thursday's close: the All-Share Index fell 1.98% (−5,052.22 pts) to 249,710.59, wiping out Wednesday's gain and then some. Market value dropped about ₦3.28trn to ₦162.13trn, and the year-to-date return eased to about 60.47%. Breadth was clearly negative. About 22 stocks rose and 40 fell, against Wednesday's 27 up and 23 down. Volume was 382.78m shares worth ₦29.55bn across 33,199 deals — fewer shares than Wednesday, and less value too. 1. The bank follow-through we flagged this morning did not show up. The Banking Index fell 0.66%. GTCO logo$GTCO gave back 0.81%, Stanbic eased 0.85%, and First HoldCo dropped 2.40%. UBA logo$UBA was nearly flat, down 0.24%. 2. Large industrials and agribusiness led the sell-off. DANGCEM logo$DANGCEM and PRESCO logo$PRESCO both hit the 10% daily limit, closing at ₦1,341.00 and ₦1,656.80. The Industrial Index finished about 7.14% lower. Insurance fell 2.51% and Consumer Goods 1.12%. 3. A few names still climbed near the limit the other way. CWG logo$CWG rose 9.94% to ₦17.15, Abbey Mortgage Bank gained 9.84% to ₦6.70, and Honeywell Flour added 9.82% to ₦26.85. Access Holdings was the most active by volume. Top gainers: CWG (+9.94% to ₦17.15), Abbey Mortgage Bank (+9.84% to ₦6.70), Honeywell Flour (+9.82% to ₦26.85). Top losers: Dangote Cement (−10.00% to ₦1,341.00), Presco (−10.00% to ₦1,656.80), Wapic Insurance (−9.91% to ₦2.00). Why it matters: two green sessions flipped in one day, and more stocks fell than rose. The headline was driven by a handful of heavyweights, so your own portfolio may look nothing like −1.98% — check the names you actually hold. Add your portfolio on Gopexly to see how today actually treated you. Not financial advice, just the close.
