The NGX bounced back 0.26% today, and it wasn't the banks doing the lifting

Tuesday's close: the All-Share Index rose 0.26% (+632.79 pts) to 245,911.13, a day after Monday's 0.91% drop. Market value grew about ₦410.86bn to ₦159.67trn. Year to date, the index is up about 58%. The interesting part is where the gains came from. Industrial and consumer goods stocks carried the day while the big banks slipped. On the consumer side, NASCON logo$NASCON jumped 7.31% to ₦183.50 and UNILEVER logo$UNILEVER rose 5.83% to ₦109.00, lifting the Consumer Goods Index to 4,042.08. On the industrial side, HBM Nigeria climbed 6.76% to ₦379.00, and the Industrial Index recovered from 10,140.51 to 10,258.95, winning back part of Monday's Dangote Cement-led fall. Banks went the other way. Zenith Bank (-0.40%), GTCO (-0.41%), Access Holdings (-0.54%) and Sterling (-2.66%) all slipped, and the Banking Index eased from 2,497.01 to 2,493.34. Even so, UBA logo$UBA was the most traded stock of the day with about 48.14m shares. Breadth turned positive: 28 stocks rose and 21 fell. Austin Laz (+9.97% to ₦3.53), ABC Transport (+9.92% to ₦6.65) and Cutix (+9.91% to ₦2.33) led the gainers, while Livestock Feeds (-9.76% to ₦17.10), Guinea Insurance (-7.78% to ₦0.83) and NPF Microfinance (-5.75% to ₦4.10) led the losers. Volume was steady at 348.69m shares, but across fewer deals: 32,588, down from 43,115 on Monday. Why it matters: one green day doesn't make a trend, but it's a reminder that the index is a mix of sectors that don't always move together. On a day when banks dipped, food and household names still pulled the market up. Coming up: Zenith Bank's ₦1.50 interim qualifies Friday, Oct 23, the same day the PZ Cussons scrip dividend election closes. The Dangote Refinery IPO closes Oct 27.
