Two results, two sell-offs, and the NGX barely moved. Here's what happened
Monday's close: the All-Share Index slipped just 0.02% (-54.28 pts) to 254,245.21, a hair below Friday's record. The market is worth ₦165.08trn and is still up 63.38% this year.
That tiny move hides a busy day. Twice as many stocks fell as rose, 41 against 21, and today the market gave its first verdict on two sets of results we covered:
1.
$ARADEL fell 9.99% to ₦1,296.00, close to the 10% daily limit. It was the biggest loss in naira terms, ₦143.90 a share, after its nine-month report showed profit after tax down 82% on the SPDC earn-out charge.
2. ACCESSCO$ACCESSCO dropped 7.34%. This morning we noted that while group profit rose 5.9%, the profit that belongs to Access shareholders rose only 0.8%.
So why didn't the index fall harder?
$DANGCEM. It touched a new 52-week high of ₦1,490 and pushed the Industrial Index up 3.34%. Because the index is weighted by company size, one giant rising can cancel out a lot of red elsewhere.
Sectors: Oil & Gas -3.75%, Banking -1.79%, Consumer Goods -1.17%, Industrial +3.34%, Insurance +0.93%.
Top gainers: Consolidated Hallmark (+10.00% to ₦7.15), Livestock Feeds (+9.77% to ₦14.60), AXA Mansard (+9.30% to ₦11.75). Top losers: Champion Breweries (-10.00% to ₦8.10), SUNU Assurances (-10.00% to ₦2.70), Aradel (-9.99%).
Trading: 517.26m shares worth ₦47.48bn across 54,015 deals. Fewer shares changed hands than Friday, but there were about 43% more deals, so lots of smaller trades.
Why it matters: a flat index can still be a rough day for your own holdings. It depends on what you own.
