Top of the volume chart isn't the top gainer. Here's why
Access Holdings was the most traded stock on the NGX on Wednesday, with about 99.37 million shares changing hands. Its price? Up just 1.43% to ₦28.40.
On the same day, Austin Laz hit the +10% daily limit at ₦2.42. Biggest volume and biggest move were two different stocks.
So what does volume actually tell you?
1. Volume is how many shares traded, not which way the price went. Every trade has a buyer and a seller.
2. Heavy volume with a small price move usually points to liquidity: lots of people willing to buy and sell near the same price.
3. A big move on light volume means fewer trades did the pushing, so it's worth watching whether it holds.
Next time you scan the "most active" list, ask two questions: did the price actually move, and how much of the company changed hands? Volume without price context can mislead.
