The NGX inched up again, but Vitafoam hit the 10% limit for a second day
Tuesday's close: the All-Share Index rose 0.02% (+44.14 pts) to 254,289.35, winning back about 81% of Monday's small loss. The market is worth ₦165.11trn and is up 63.41% this year.
Once again the headline hides the detail. More stocks fell than rose, 32 against 20, so the gain came from a few big names, not the whole market.
1.
$VITAFOAM fell 9.99% to ₦141.50, right at the daily limit again. This morning we looked at why its stock dropped almost 10% on Monday even though full-year profit jumped 47%. Over two sessions it's now down roughly 19%. When a stock is limit-down two days running, it usually means there were more sellers than the daily cap let through on day one.
2. Some of Monday's casualties bounced.
$INTBREW rose 6.47% to ₦9.05, ACCESSCO$ACCESSCO gained 1.89% to ₦27.00, and Zenith Bank added 0.78% to ₦116.90. Stanbic IBTC rose 1.17% to ₦163.90.
Top gainers: University Press (+9.52% to ₦4.60), Omatek (+8.59% to ₦1.39), International Breweries (+6.47% to ₦9.05). Top losers: FTG Insurance (-10.00% to ₦1.53), Vitafoam (-9.99% to ₦141.50), UPDC REIT (-9.95% to ₦19.00).
Trading: 525.44m shares worth ₦22.61bn across 39,078 deals. Slightly more shares than Monday, but value traded fell by about half, so the busy trading was in cheaper stocks.
Why it matters: two flat days in a row, and in both of them more stocks fell than rose. The index can look calm while plenty of individual holdings are moving a lot.
