More stocks fell than rose today, yet the NGX still closed at a record. Here's how

Friday's close: the All-Share Index edged up 0.09% (+216.47 pts) to a new record of 254,299.49. The market's total value crossed ₦165trn for the first time, ending at ₦165.11trn, and the index is up 63.42% this year. But look under the hood and more stocks fell than rose. So how does the index still go up? Because it's weighted by company size. MTNN logo$MTNN rose 3.03% to ₦850.00, and with a market value of about ₦17.85trn, that one move outweighed a lot of small losers. This morning we asked three questions. Here's how they played out: 1. The market didn't reward NB logo$NB's profit jump today. Nigerian Breweries slipped 2.37% to ₦72.00. 2. DANGCEM logo$DANGCEM held its new 52-week high, closing flat at ₦1,420.00. 3. Trading picked up sharply: nearly 1bn shares changed hands across 37,821 deals, up about 52% in volume from Thursday. First HoldCo was the most traded stock by far, even as it fell another 5.10% to ₦119.15. Top gainers: Honeywell Flour Mills (+10.00% to ₦22.55), May & Baker (+10.00% to ₦41.80), Livestock Feeds (+9.92% to ₦13.30). Fidelity Bank also jumped 9.09% to ₦24.00. Top losers: Caverton (-10.00% to ₦3.60), LivingTrust Mortgage Bank (-9.94% to ₦2.90), Veritas Kapital (-9.91% to ₦1.00). The week in one line: the Industrial Index climbed about 8.75% from Monday's level, while the Banking Index slid about 5.63%, falling every single day. Why it matters: a record index doesn't mean most stocks had a good day. A few giants can carry the headline number, so it's worth checking how your own holdings actually moved.
